Life & Legacy of Felton Smith
Felton Smith was born and raised in Redan, Dekalb County, Georgia to the late Willie and Essie Mae Fears Smith on September 11, 1928 and completed his journey of life on June 16, 2020. Felton was the seventh sibling of ten children.
Felton moved to Cleveland, Ohio as a young man. There he met and married the love of his life, Ruth Mae Gardener, on January 31, 1948. Felton and Ruth or “Ruuuff” as he said it, loved to dance and they were always the life of the party.
Felton lived a long and prosperous life. He loved to tell jokes and kept his friends and family laughing. As a self-made businessman, he owned a pharmacy, service station and a corner store where he became a pillar in the community. He was also a master welder and took pride in his work, which was often described as impeccable. Felton also had a passion for photography. He could be counted on to capture all of the family’s festivities.
Felton was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Essie Smith; siblings, Lizzie Kate Wright, Peter James Smith, Louvenia Lewis, Willie L. Smith, Sadie Mae Allen, Nellie Johnson and Roosevelt Smith.Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 72 years, Ruth Mae Smith; a son, Tracy Johnson (Gina), of Powder Springs, GA; one brother, Leonzie Smith (Catherine) of Cleveland, OH; one sister, Allene Smith Harper of Lithonia, GA; a special niece Dejee Harper Mercier of Conyers, GA; devoted and loving friend, Tiffany McDaniel, who he called “MzTee” and family; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
