Ruth Ann Horowitz Obituary

Ruth Ann Shiley Horowitz was born October 16th, 1956, and was a proud native of Mineral Ridge, Ohio. She passed away at the age of 66 on Sunday, November 27th around 7:30pm at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. This was after nearly three years of battling severe complications from a stroke suffered in January of 2020.

Ruth Ann graduated from Mineral Ridge Highschool in the class of 1974, and wholeheartedly believed in the power of a good education. Thusly, she dedicated her lifelong career to teaching, having graduated from Youngtown State University in the class of 1979 with a bachelor’s degree of Spanish and Education. She went on to obtain her master’s degree in Education and Technology from Cleveland State University in 2001 and worked for over twenty-seven years in the Cleveland Municipal School District.  She concurrently spent her career championing the cause of free public education for everyone, everywhere.

Ruth Ann spent most of her free time reading, sewing and crocheting, and attended many craft shows to sell her handiwork, though more often, she donated it to those in need. She also dedicated a great deal of her time to her pets – she was a true cat person. She loved ALL of her pets so dearly, adamantly believing they were to be included as full members of the family. On every occasion, they were included, and she even signed their names on birthday cards for her loved ones.

More than anything she loved her family.  Ruth Ann met Barry Evan Horowitz on New Years Eve in 1985 and the two dated for two years before getting married on December 27, 1987 and they had two children together, Deborah on July 5, 1989 and Benjamin on March 29, 1991 and raised them together as an inseparable unit.  She supported her children in their education and in the arts, never missing a recital or band concert. No mother was prouder than Ruth Ann when she watched her children receive their high school diplomas, and she was even prouder still watching her husband receive his college degree, and watching her children receive theirs.

Ruth Ann's passing is preceded by her father, Darvin Shiley, and mother, Edith Carnes, sister-in-law Amy Horowitz, dear friend Paula, and the many, many furry family members she raised, nurtured and loved over her life. Included in this was her family’s beloved dog, Harold, and their cats Venus and Bleu. Ruth Ann is survived by her lifelong beloved partner, Barry Horowitz, sister, Janet Shiley, daughter Deborah and son Ben. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Ron Horowitz, her nephew, Milton Horowitz, and many, many cousins including Jean Shippert and Marlene Boston, whom she shared regular lunch outings with. She will also be deeply missed by her cousins Rick and Jerff Shiley who were like brothers to her, in addition to her dog, Tomo, and her cats Cheese and Mercury. As well, she leaves behind beloved friends in Peggy, Mary Ellen, and Mary Ann.
